Skillset
My skillset consists of both front and back end development, with familiarity with design techniques utilizing the following tools:
Savannah Skinner
Growing up with a database administrator for a mom gave me and my siblings a strong love for technology. I was the classroom IT kid who doodled on the corner of their homework. This passion for both art and technology led me to web design and development, a way of marrying my natural skills and interests.
My philosophy towards design and development has been fairly simple: inuitive, efficient, and beautiful. What I create should be relevant, pleasing to look at, intuitive to use, and easily maintained. I bring this mindset to every project and strive to improve a little more each day. My current interest lies in accessibility. Every person should have equal and fair access to the web, and I'm constantly learning and growing towards that goal.
This portfolio serves as a playground to try out ideas, a gallery to showcase my progress, and an introduction to those who’d like to know more. If you are interested in working with me, see my resume and what I can do on the skillset page. If you see something you’d like more information on, reach out to me using the contact page. Feedback in the form of constructive criticism, commendation and general advice is always appreciated.
Professional Experience
Application Developer
Office of Management and Enterprise Services
In addition to the work I did in the role below, my role expanded to include: deployments, local testing, version upgrades, component/feature creation, and issue management with Adobe to resolve internal bugs we didn’t have access to.
UX/UI Developer
Office of Management and Enterprise Services
Updated and maintained our custom components using JavaScript and CSS. Lead client projects. I handled: initial scope meetings, web author training, site creation, permissions, analytic board creation and training, web form creation, ongoing support, etc... Collaborated with our Web Designer on client site designs and component changes. Followed W3C accessibility guidelines on all projects, working with our QA team from the design to the finished product. Assisted state organizations with moving existing content to a more accessible state, in accordance with federal law. Trained web authors on accessible practices so future content will meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards. Solved client issues, tracked through our Service Now ticket system.
PHP Developer
Hostek
Assisted with maintaining and altering existing systems for creating and managing client virtual private servers. Analyzed issues caused by PHP, C# and JavaScript application code. Proposed and implemented solutions to resolve application bugs and issues. Used Basecamp to track client issues; resolved those issues within our systems and negotiated satisfactory compromises when necessary. Created client reports and mailing lists using SQL. Also created custom WHMCS modules. Built our SalesManago module, which handled sending customer and transaction data to their external application and was built under strict and impromptu timelines. Maintained and updated all US & UK websites to ensure marketing strategies were in sync.
UX/UI Developer
Teleflora
Implement website improvements based on performance issues found with Google performance tools, pagespeed insights & lighthouse. Average site score increases of 10 on both mobile and desktop versions with some sites seeing 40+. Implemented global scale style changes. Developed fully responsive themes for clients using designs built with Figma. Modified and fixed existing themes. Wrote JavaScript for the following: CSS animations; custom pop ups; and custom features. These features included integrations of Google maps, Instagram, and more into client themes. Also tested new features and identified and resolved bugs.
Projects
Vue + GSAP Experimentation
Created a slider from an example image using my basic tool set and then recreated that same slider using Vue & GSAP to get more familiar with the tools. I have a greater appreciation for GSAP and look forward to using it in further projects! See this project on github.
Unfortunately, most older projects have broken due to server changes & language upgrades over time. Feel free to review the code at my github! Each project links directly to its repository, if available.
Vet Game
A simple online game for my nephews to use in addition to a toy set I gave them. This mvc web app uses JavaScript's fetch to interact with the backend. The php backend app responds with json. As a small project built for a mobile experience, it is not fully responsive. See this project on github.
48 Hour Challenge
I joined a coding group where we regularly challenge ourselves to do better and/or work faster. This challenge was designing and building a simple site within 48 hours.
Much To-do
This project uses JavaScript’s fetch method to reach out to my api for backend processing. It accepts RESTful urls and return ready-to-present pages. This was also my first in depth project using MVC and OOP on the backend. It was a great experience and I look forward to using similar ideology on my future projects. The next step for this project is social logins such as Google and/or Facebook. See this project on github.
Terra Navis
Terra Navis is an online resource providing useful information about earthships. It was a group project with 3 of my talented classmates for the Website Design Team Business Professional's of America Competition (State, 1st Place). My primary work was in front and back end but I was also involved in the design. The admin section includes an article builder, forgotten password system, and dark/light mode switch. See this project on github.
Discography
This was the first site where I designed the style tile, wireframe, and site. I got a good in depth look at that process and learned a lot from the experience. This was also my first project using bootstrap, specifically the grid system. The responsiveness of bootstrap’s grid system continues to impress me.
Tech Research
I worked off of a style tile to design this site. I then used CSS’ grid systems to have the site make the best use of available space at all sizes. This project also taught me when to push past obstacles vs when to temper what I design with the limit of the tools at my disposal.
Multipurpose
The first site I ever built, this simple project was to take an image and create a responsive site from it. Later on, I overlaid screenshots of the site over the original image to ensure a close match. The site has no interactivity since I did not know JavaScript at the time of its’ creation.
